arabian inspired avocado toast

avocado toast

This isn't so much of a recipe as a suggestion for a fun little Middle Eastern twist on the beloved millennial staple of avocado toast. Add some Yemeni Zhoug Sauce, available from Trader Joe's, as well as some pickled pink turnips. The Zhoug adds a lot of heat (think chimichurri but spicier) and the pickled turnips balance it beautifully -- sort of like how ginger complements wasabi.

Plus, the pink color makes the food look so pretty. Who doesn't like pretty food?

Servings: 1 person

Time: 5 minutes

2 small to medium avocados, around 100 grams mashed

2 slices of bread

28 grams queso fresco

28 grams pickled turnips (I used Ziyad brand)

2 tsp Zhoug sauce

2 tsp olive oil

1 tsp dried minced onion

1/16 tsp Adobo seasoning

Pinch of salt and pepper

Parsley and cilantro leaves, for garnishing

  1. Peel the avocados and mash them in a bowl. Add the adobo seasoning;

  2. Spread the mashed avocado over the pieces of bread;

  3. Sprinkle the minced onion and crumble the cheese on top;

  4. Cut the pickled turnips into thin slices and layer on top;

  5. In a small bowl, combine the Zhoug sauce and olive oil and mix together;

  6. Drizzle the Zhoug sauce/olive oil combo over the toast;

  7. Top with salt and pepper;

  8. Enjoy!
